Electronic Device Policy
At Eakin, we always strive to teach students personal responsibility, ownership, and respect for an educational environment focused on learning. We have recently seen more personal communication devices such as cellphones and smart watches accessed during the day in a way not aligned with educational use. To help maintain a focus on learning and teach personal responsibility for devices, we are sharing the following personal communication and electronic device policy.
Per MNPS (Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools) Board of Education Policy 6.312, Elementary school students “may possess a cellular telephone or other personal technology on school property. Use of such technology will be at the building administrator's discretion.
The Eakin Elementary Administrative Team will adhere to the following procedure:
Personal communication & electronic devices include, but are not limited to watches, cell phones, tablets, etc. which have wireless and/or cellular capabilities. Personal communication & electronic devices should not interfere with instruction and may not be used during school hours unless under special permission granted by an administrator.
Faculty & staff who see a personal communication & electronic device in use by a student will:
- Request that the student put away the device until the end of the school day
- If the student does not comply with request 1, the personal communication & electronic device will be confiscated, a parent/guardian will be notified, and the device will be securely kept in the front office until retrieved by the parent/guardian.
We recognize that many students have devices so they can communicate with families after school and support students having the responsibility to do so. We require that if they are to have a personal device at school, they adhere to the stated procedure. As always, the best solution is always working together to keep our focus on learning so our students can reach their fullest potential and SOAR as Eakin Eagles!
Dress Code
At Eakin, we want the focus to be on learning! The goal of our dress code is to help students prepare for a great day focused on learning and helping others. We also want students to dress in a manner that represents belonging to the best school community in Nashville.
Additionally, when we are unified in our school clothing as a community it better serves everyone. We are able to hold donation drives, help all students with changes of clothes, and generously give new and high-quality used clothing when needed. We take great pride in our Eakin community and togetherness, which our SSA policy is in place to reflect. To accomplish this, we have the following SSA guidance:
Permitted Clothing
Eakin logo clothing, or "Eakin Wear," may be worn every day.
Tops
Students can wear short sleeved or long sleeved solid-colored shirts with a collar or Eakin logo shirts every day.
Bottoms
Shorts, pants, jumpers, or jeans that are solid colored blue, navy, black, gray, or khaki. Bottoms need to be in good condition and proper fitting without rips, holes, etc.
Sweatshirts
Students are welcomed to wear crew neck sweatshirts, any hooded wear will be permitted during recess and otherwise kept with personal belongings indoors (i.e., lockers). Under the sweatshirt needs to be a shirt/top that fits the criteria listed above.
Outerwear
Students are welcomed to bring outerwear as needed. Students will need to keep non-sweatshirt outwear and hooded items with their personal belongings during the day.
Additional Guidance
Collared shirts include polo-style shirts, button down shirts, or turtlenecks. Logos/emblems on shirts need to be minimal, save for Eakin logo shirts. Students may wear long-sleeve shirts under short sleeve collar shirts and Eakin logo shirts. Leggings may be work under dresses, skirts, jumpers, and/or shorts. As needed, students may wear belts. We do strongly encourage belts for upper grades (3rd grade and above)
Fit
We want students to be comfortable! As such, clothing should fit appropriately and not be excessively baggy or tight to the point that it inhibits movement (like sitting on the carpet or playing during gym/recess)
Shoes
We strongly recommend students wearing closed toed shoes or other athletic shoes each day that allow them to run, jump, and play. Shoes with heels are not advised during the day as they can easily lead to injury.
Eakin Wear
Students are permitted to wear Eakin Wear every day. To purchase Eakin Wear, please visit the school store on the PTO website. Purchased items are assembled by the PTO, and you will be notified when your order is ready for pick up.
Clothing Donations
We want every child to come to school feeling and looking their best. As such, we are always accepting donations of new or clean, ‘previously loved’ clothing that is free of rips or tears. Students especially love receiving Eakin Wear from previous years. To donate, bring the clothing in a bag clearly marked ‘donate’ by the main office.
